Many celebrate St. Nicholas Day on December 6th. Do you know who St. Nicholas was? He was a priest known for secret gift-giving, patron of children and sailors. I think (and many others) that our dear Santa was created based on the legends of Saint Nicholas.
If you would like to read more about St. Nick here a couple of links:

ReplyDeleteI use to teach Religion for our Catholic Church, years ago and we would have the little ones put a shoe outside the door and they would get a little gift in their shoe on St. Nicholas Day. Unfortunately, we only taught them about as much information as you gave above but they loved it!!
ReplyDeleteWe celebrate Sinterklaas! I also believe Santa was created from Sinterklaas. Unfortunately (for the parents, that is), it nowadays means we have to give new toys on dec 6th and on Christmas.
