M for Maggie (A to Z Challenge)

Yes, very controversial figure and disliked by some (definitely by socialist and communists) but my hero. She was the first female Prime Minister of Britain. When she was elected England was in a time of economic and political turmoil, with the government nearly bankrupt, unemployment on the rise and conflicts with labor unions. This brilliant woman cut social welfare programs, reduced trade union power and privatized certain industries. Thanks to her Britain was strong again.

There is a lovely book by John O'Sullivan: 'The President, the Pope and the Prime Minister: Three Who Changed the World'

So Long my friends,
Evalina

  1. She is a very controversial figure in the UK. I was too young when she was in power to take much notice - she was the woman who took milk away from schoolchildren, but I didn't like milk, so I didn't mind that! She definitely had a huge impact.

  2. As someone who suffered a great deal from her polices I'm afraid I'll have to agree with disagree with you in this choice!

  4. Thank you for expressing your opinion on your blog! I have seen several
blog writers disparaged because they express their own opinion. Even if someone
doesn't agree with your opinion, thank God for the freedom to express it.

This freedom to express publicly our opinion is just one of the freedoms large government and people who support it would
love to remove from us. So please be respectful if you MUST disagree. Even
better, move on to the next blog.

  6. While I don't live in the UK, my husband grew up there and lived in the UK until his late 30's. I have always admired Maggie for the strong woman she was. Hubby said that she was a great politician and yes, a lot of people didn't like her policies (and some of the policies may not have been good ones...), but no one gets everything right! I wish that I had the mental capacity to work like she did - she was amazing! One of her best lines was about treating the country's money like a household budget - there is only so much to go around.... that is still true today!
Love her or hate her... I think we should at least respect her for being such a strong woman in a man's world!
    Hugs xx

  7. I don't have much of a say about her policies, but she certainly was a woman and politician to be reckoned with!

  9. Hi Evalina .. interesting how much as changed in 35 - 30 years ... she made two mistakes ... one was the poll tax and the other was staying on too long ... but she certainly made history. And I had gone to South Africa at that stage .. cheers Hilary
