Ash Wednesday

The Biblical custom for repentance was to fast, wear sackcloth, sit in dust and ashes, and put dust and ashes on one's head. Was this custom to be a beginning of Ash Wednesday?

I'm quite far away from the catholic church (or any church period) so I will skip the holly ashes today. Since I do not have any sackcloth to wear I will have to skip that too. Regardless,  I decided to get prepared for the Lent. I'm giving up chocolate in all forms until Easter and snacks between meals.

A long time ago I started to stitch Jesus. I bought this kit on eBay and was totally shocked when noticed Chinese instructions. This is where I left it off... I really wanted to finish it so I bought another kit from 123stitch.com this time, just to make sure I will have all in English. Can you guess? I never put another stitch in this project again. Now I would like to finish it, really. The only problem is that I do not stitch on Aida anymore. What should I do? Should I start all over on the linen and love every stitch or smudge my forehead with ashes (I have plenty of ashes in my wood stove, not holly and not from burned last year Palms, but will do the trick) and keep going.

I also found a lovely book 'The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah' which highlights the intellectual and religious perspectives of the people who lived during the time of Jesus. It will be so cool to learn of locations where Jesus would have walked, prayed, and preached.

So long my friends,
Evalina

  1. I will never forget the "giant Jesus head" I stitched for my Grandmother many years ago. I didn't stitch the background because I had literally had enough (seriously, how many colors of brown should be allowed in the free world?). The thought of doing it over sends shivers down my spine even now!!

Good luck with it whatever you decide to do...you've come an awful long way to start over. You could always think of it as "nostalgia stitching", returning to the kingdom of aida!!

  2. I am not sure what you should Evalina, but I would start over. I too do not stitch on aida any longer and would not care to.

I have given up chocolate for quite a few years also. I chose something different this year. Maybe you will attend church for Easter?

  3. Mmm, That's a lot to start over, but if you're going to hate every stitch, I would do it. I like this kit - it is in my stash to do someday. I need to get something else done first. Oh, and I started Guardian Angel, finally! Only a few stitches done so far, though.

  5. I agree that that is alot of progress to frog and start over. I would probably suck it up and just finish it if it were me, but I agree with the others that if you're really going to hate it you should start over. After all, we stitch because we enjoy it, right? So where is the sense in working on something you won't enjoy?!

  7. I would give this WIP to someone who enjoys aida cloth, and then start over with a linen for yourself. That way you don't waste what you've already done. Good luck with whichever you choose to do !!

  8. This is beautiful, so much of yourself is in this already......I don't embroider and so I don't know from Aida or non Aida...except that it is the cloth on which you work. Only you can decide whether to press on or start over, good luck with your decision.

  9. I agree with Sue! It is a beautiful picture and you should enjoy stitching it (on linen). Pass this WIP on to someone who can finish it and love every stitch, too!

  10. I think it looks great on aida fabric Evalina. But, if your not going to be happy working on it, than you should start over.

  12. Wow, you have done so much! You will have to decide what to do. That would be a great book suggestion for Lent. thanks

  13. Oh it's so beautiful it seems a waste not to finish it.
If you don't like Aida cloth, maybe you can gift it to someone
    who would love it.
I suggest you confer with ZoomZoom!

  14. If it was me I would definitely be smudging with ashes and continuing on. But you are so fast at stitching that starting anew might work really well for you. What is the issue with Aida? Can you tell I don't do much cross stitch? :) God hears your words to him no matter where you are. I think I will give up something for Lent too - better decide what eh!

  15. Oh, I just love what you've stitches so far. I hope to one day stitch such a lovely piece myself.

It's funny you said you don't stitch on Aida anymore...Oh how I wish I could see the smaller fabrics to stitch on them. Aida is the only thing I can see anymore to stitch on...and that's with glasses, too. But it's ok, I am just thankful to be able to see as well as I do.

If you don't enjoy stitching on Aida, then I say, start all over on the fabric you love. When you stitch something as meaningful as a picture that represents Jesus, then I think the entire experience should be one of love and peace. Each stitch would become almost like a prayer of thankfulness. :)

Blessings to always dear friend. : )

  17. Aida must feel so strange after linen Evalina. Maybe you could gift it on to someone and start again with linen.
